My nursing course finished in November 1973.
The graduation ceremony was held on February 7, 1974. (36 years ago) in the Dining Hall on the main floor of the Nurses New Home (Hagley Hostel) at Christchurch Hospital.
There was much speculation about which nursing medal the few male students would receive.
I believe I was the first male student called. We had three male students graduating.
I was unable to see the medal as it was pinned on my nursing uniform. I saw it after I moved away from the presentation dias.
I was really pleased to see the NZRN medal hanging on my chest.
A man who graduated in the class before me came up to me, poked my medal and said "I heard you got that." He was not happy about it.
Although I was happy to receive the NZRN medal, I really wanted the "New Zealand Male Nurse" medal. I liked its design better.
I wrote the Nursing Council of New Zealand requesting the male nurse medal and it was granted.
So I ended up with both.
